Day 22 – Cross Country Bike Tour – Dodge City to Great Bend, KS

Windy, warm and wonderful.  Good shoulders on the roads and minimum traffic.  A good day in Kansas.

This evening the temperature has warmed up.  Some conflict among reports, but somewhere in the mid 90’s.  We talked over dinner and made a decision to leave a half-hour earlier tomorrow.  A good choice.

Kansas Windmills

Opening up the Feed Zone at Midway Park was the highlight of the day, but first the riders passed a windmill farm almost equal to the one we passed on Day 3 just outside Palm Springs, CA.  Huge blades spinning in the Kansas wind!

Pressing forward to Midway Park, we were greeted by some of the locals who were enjoying a Saturday morning Farmer’s Market at the park.  One gentleman came over and talked with us and then sent his adorable little wife (about 4’8″) over to give us a jar of her home made plum jelly.  She explained to us that she had come to Kansas from Thailand 41 years ago.  We hugged. It was one of those random moments; a random act of kindness on her part, that will not be soon forgotten.  All a part of the cross country journey.

Before heading to the hotel we stopped at Pawnee Rock to take in the view – a beautiful 360 view of the surrounding landscape.  Having a few minutes to spare, Steve and I checked out two of the local shops.  One was run by the Mayor of Pawnee Rock.  Lots of stuff!

Two days until we rest.  Kansas is a big state.
